Yankees Facing Playoff Elimination

Yankees face playoff elimination against the Blue Jays after dropping the first two games in Toronto. Can they rally at home to keep their season alive?

After winning the wildcard round of the MLB Playoffs against the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees landed another AL East opponent in the Division Series, and now they are on the brink of elimination.

The Yankees opened the Division Series on Saturday in Toronto, and the Blue Jays have done everything right while jumping to a 2 - 0 lead that has the Blue Jays eyeing a trip to the ALCS.

The Blue Jays have made six appearances in the ALCS, their last coming in 2016. Keep in mind, the Championship Series was only created in 1969, and the Yankees have 19 ALCS showings since the league made the switch to the postseason.

Can the Yankees survive and get themselves back in the series with the Blue Jays, or is the end of the road?

Carlos Rodon and Shane Bieber will take the Yankee Stadium mound on Tuesday, and with the season on the line, the Yankees hope for former is up for a big outing. Rodon has made one start in the playoffs against Boston, and despite the no-decision, the Yankees won his start in game 2 of the wildcard series after the Bombers dropped game 1.

Roadon pitched six innings and struck out six sox, but 3 walks and 3 earned runs was good enough to keep his team in the game long enough to get the win and eventually advance to the ALDS.

The league-leading team with the long ball in the regular season has only hit three homers in 5 playoff games, and the only solid contributor to the offense has been the Yankee Captain, Aaron Judge.

Judge has yet to go deep in the playoffs, but he is 8 for 18 at the dish and sporting a .444 BA headed into Tuesday’s tilt in the Boogie Down.

Giancarlo Stanton and Trent Grisham have gotten the most chances at the plate with 20 ABs, and the pair is batting a massive .150 in the postseason.

Jazz Chisolm’s bat has disappeared in the playoffs with only 3 hits in 16 ABs, and Cody Bellinger is only batting .211 with the one home run from the series against Boston.

While the Yankees led the league with 5.24 runs per game in the regular season, they have only scored more than 4 runs once in the postseason, and that happened on Sunday. After getting down 13 - 2 and in a bad place, the Yankees made the final score look better scoring 7 runs, but we call that junk time when it amounts to nothing but a loss.

Toronto enjoyed almost a week before hosting the first two games of the ALDS, and the rest has obviously helped. The Blue Jays have belted out 23 runs in the first two games at home, and they will enjoy home field advantage in the ALCS should they get there.

As you look over the playoff roster for the Jays, not one player that has seen the field is batting under .250! NOT ONE! Vladi Guerrero is batting .669 with 6 hits in 9 plate appearances against the Yankees, and Dalton Varsho has come out of no where to lead the Jays 1.875 slugging percentage among his 6 hits from 8 plate appearances.

After spending seven season in Cleveland, Shane Bieber was out for most of last season, and didn’t make his first start of 2025 until August 22nd. Bieber went 1 - 1 with three playoff starts with the Indians, before they were Guardians, and his two starts in 2022 were stellar.

With the Jays feeling good about themselves, and Bieber getting a chance to finish the Yankees on the road, you can give me Toronto on Tuesday as +125 underdogs to sweep the Yanks, and end their season. Not winning the AL East division is now coming back to haunt the Bombers, and the best team in the American League looks in form, and ready to turn out the lights in New York!

Expect the Jays to advance on Tuesday night, and be the first team that reaches the Champions Series this season.
