Philip Rivers Withdraws From Bills Coaching Search After Meeting

Philip Rivers withdrew from the Bills head coach search days after meeting the team, leaving Buffalo to pivot to other candidates.

Philip Rivers, the ex-Colts quarterback, has decided not to go after the head coach job with the Buffalo Bills. This news came out on Monday from several reports. Rivers had talked to the Bills team on Friday in Florida, but just three days later, the 44-year-old pulled out of the race.

Sean McDermott got fired as Bills head coach, so the team started looking for a new one right away. Rivers stood out because of his long time as a player in the NFL. He played 18 seasons total, 16 with the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers, and two with the Indianapolis Colts. He made the Pro Bowl eight times and knows offenses inside out from all those years throwing passes.

People thought Rivers could be a good fit for Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Rivers has mentored Allen before, and they even share the same agent. Allen respects Rivers a lot. Plus, the Bills' general manager Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula let Allen help pick the new coach.

But Rivers has no real coaching experience at college or pro levels. Right now, he coaches high school football at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama. His son, Gunner, is about to start his senior year there. Before this, Rivers retired after the 2020 season, took five years off, then came back last month in 2025 to start three games for the Colts. He retired again after their regular season ended.

NFL reporter Mike Garafolo say it's just not the right time for Rivers and his family. Jumping straight from high school coaching and playing at 44 to leading an NFL team raised some doubts. Rivers brings great knowledge from his playing days and connections with coaches and players. Still, he chose family and his current job over the big chance.

The Bills keep moving fast to find a new coach. They plan to interview Davis Webb on Monday. Webb works as pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos.

Another name is Grant Udinski, offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Udinski pulled out of a coaching search with the Cleveland Browns on Monday too. He just signed a new deal with the Jaguars. It gives him a raise for the 2026 season if he does not get the Bills job. ESPN's Adam Schefter shared this from sources.

Philip Rivers entered the NFL in 2004 after college at North Carolina State. He took over as starter for the Chargers in 2006 and led them to the playoffs many times. His career stats show over 63,000 passing yards and 421 touchdowns. Fans loved his grit, he always competed hard, even if his team did not win a Super Bowl.

After 2020, he hung up his cleats but stayed around football by coaching high school. His return in late 2025 with the Colts surprised everyone. He started three games, showing he still had the skills. Now retired for good as a player, he focuses on coaching kids and family.

Losing Rivers means the Bills miss a player-turned-coach who knows Josh Allen well. Allen needs a coach who can build a strong offense around his running and passing skills. The team finished strong this season but wants more playoff wins.

NFL coaching jobs are tough to get. Many teams now look at ex-players like Rivers for fresh ideas. But going from high school to NFL head coach is rare. Guys like Jim Harbaugh did it after college success, but Rivers' path was different.

Bills fans hope the next coach brings wins. With Allen leading, they have a real shot at the Super Bowl. Interviews with Webb and Udinski show the search is wide open.

Philip Rivers bows out of Bills HC race, spotlighting Josh Allen's mentor link, Sean McDermott's exit fallout, Davis Webb's Broncos rise, Grant Udinski's Jaguar gamble, and high school-to-NFL coaching leaps amid family calls, QB legacies, and Buffalo's playoff push.
