Lions and Chiefs Get Heated After Sunday Night Game
Tempers flared after the Chiefs’ 30-17 win as Brian Branch and Patrick Mahomes exchanged words, sparking a postgame brawl the NFL is now reviewing.
The Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs had a surprise ending to their Sunday Night NFL game, as tempers flared and fights broke out as the teams were walking off the field.
Usually, it’s before or during a game that we see this kind of emotion being let out, but oddly, this mini-brawl happened after the game had ended.
Safety Brian Branch was the culprit for the Lions, and his attitude after a 30 - 17 loss to the Chiefs is apparently to blame for the incident.
Branch and Mahomes came together and had words, and that’s when JJ Smith-Schuster tried to intervene. Branch belted Smith-Schuster, who walked off the field with a bloody nose after being knocked to the ground, and that’s when the sh*t hit the fan.
With both teams headed to their respective locker rooms, almost all of the players and coaches were on the field, it looked like a much bigger brawl than it appeared to be.
The game itself was innocent enough, and the Lions reverted to their old ways, suddenly looking like the 2008 team again. That was the 0 - 16 campaign for Detroit, and they made so many mistakes on Sunday night that it felt like Deja vu.
Dropped balls and bad coaching is what led to the 4 - 1 Lions turning into the 4- 2 Lions, and we all know the Chiefs really needed that win to avoid a 2 - 4 start to the season.
Regardless of the game's outcome, Brian Branch is undoubtedly being called into the Commissioner's office and will likely face a substantial fine and suspension.
The question of why will be the main point of the conversation, because the game was over, and that is when emotions usually wind down and do not flare up.
The Lions have another big battle in store this coming weekend with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are 5 - 1 and on top of the NFC South Division standings.
Detroit is favored on the early line at -4.5, and we will see if the Lions are short-handed without Branch in the lineup.
No one is proud of the incident, and Smith-Schuster can literally file charges against Branch for the incident. To a man, he will not likely take it that far, but the NFL Commissioner isn’t going to take this lightly!
There is no need for this in the game, and especially at that point of the game where celebratory handshakes are happening during the cooldown period.
The only way we can see a rematch of the Chiefs and Lions would be in the Super Bowl, and if they each get there, hopefully, this will be something that plays no role in the big game. Let’s go on a limb and say that the Commissioner will make sure that nothing like that happens on that grand stage!
